Mike O’Mahony: Serpentine Swim for the Rainbow Trust

On 21 September Mike O’Mahony, our Managing Director, swam two miles in open water in Hyde Park’s Serpentine – raising £1,500 for our chosen charity Rainbow Trust.

The swim marked the second part of Mike’s fundraising challenge. In May he rode the Vélo Birmingham & Midlands – a 100-mile cycle route taking in the cities of Birmingham and Coventry, and the West Midlands countryside. Nevertheless, the swim was a much bigger challenge for him. While he has cycled long distances several times before, swimming is not his strongest sport.

Said Mike ahead of his swim: “For those of you of about my age, I’m no Mark Spitz and if you’re a millennial then I’m no Michael Phelps! It’s hard keeping a straight line, let alone doing it for over an hour, non-stop in murky green water that you are sharing with ducks, swans, bugs, plankton and whatever else habitats the surface and the 300mm or so below! For me, finishing would be a result.”

Mike successfully completed the distance in 1hr 13mins swimming at an average pace of 2:02min per 100m. ”Thanks for all your sponsorship, Rainbow Trust will be delighted,” he said on finishing the challenge. “I seem to do something like this every year now, and every year I am humbled by people’s generosity.

“It all went well – with a couple of hundred other swimmers in my wave it was a bit like being in a washing machine one moment and on the dodgems the next. And just like at work – open your mouth at the wrong time without thinking, you pay for it!

You can see my stats below if you are at a loose end for a moment or two; a great day, with piles of cash raised for Rainbow Trust and the principal event charity, Children with Cancer – thank you again.”

The Rainbow Trust supports families who have children with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. Family support workers provide a lifeline allowing families to continue to function as normally as possible in extremely demanding times.

Members of staff had the pleasure of meeting a Family Support Worker from the Rainbow Trust earlier this year and heard first hand what a difference the charity makes to people’s lives, as this short film on the charity’s YouTube channel illustrates.

rainbow trustLouise Bingham, Corporate Partnerships Manager of Rainbow Trust said: “Rainbow Trust are delighted to be supported by HDR | Andrew Reid as their charity partner, and it’s a fantastic show of commitment that Mike is leading the way with such an impressive challenge. 97% of the charity’s income is through voluntary donations, so every penny raised by Mike and his team at HDR | Andrew Reid really does make a huge difference in allowing us to support over 2,500 families a year, who have a seriously ill child. From diagnosis, through treatment and beyond, whatever the future holds, Rainbow Trust is here for families who need us.”
